Description
Among Denison’s collections of fine printing and artists' books is a rare and exceptionally beautiful set of Shakespeare’s works, which belonged to Ellen Browning Scripps. The set was edited by William Ernest Henley and printed in Edinburgh, 1901-1904. In the "Advertisement," Henley explains many of his editorial and design choices.

Each volume is bound in red Morocco leather inlaid with gold. Each inner cover, front and back and also bound in Morocco leather, features a portrait of a different heroine from Shakespeare's plays, and the endpapers are covered in green satin.These volumes are elaborately illustrated with illuminated title pages, engravings, prints, and hand-painted watercolor portraits throughout the texts, offering different artists' interpretations of many of Shakespeare's characters and scenes.
